With weeds, when you spray matters as much as what you spray. Get the timing right and a rock bed stays clear with far less work. Get it wrong and you spend all summer chasing weeds that were preventable. Here is the season-by-season timing for St. George, and how a weed control plan takes it off your plate. For why weeds keep pushing through gravel in the first place, see how to stop weeds from growing through rock.
When should you actually treat?
There are two jobs, and they happen at different times. Pre-emergent stops seeds before they sprout, so it goes down before you see any weeds. Post-emergent kills weeds that are already up, so it works during the growing season. The chart below shows the windows for Southern Utah.
Pre-emergent: late winter and late summer
The most important application is pre-emergent in late winter to early spring, roughly February into March, before the soil warms and the first flush of weeds comes up. A second pre-emergent pass in late summer, around August and September, heads off the winter annuals. Miss these windows and the barrier goes down after seeds have already sprouted, which does very little good.
Post-emergent: through the growing season
From spring into fall, whenever weeds are actively growing, post-emergent is your cleanup. It works best on young, small weeds, so hitting them early beats waiting until a bed is overrun. In the peak heat of midsummer, spray in the cooler morning and follow the label, since extreme heat can change how some herbicides work.
What if you miss the window?
You are not out of luck, you are just on cleanup duty. Switch to post-emergent to knock down what came up, keep the bed clear, and get back on schedule with pre-emergent at the next window. The whole goal is to break the seed cycle, and the sooner you get the timing right, the less you have to fight.
The easy way: put it on a schedule
Timing is exactly the part people forget, which is why a recurring plan works so well. With Tdooz weed control, a local pro handles both the pre-emergent windows and the post-emergent passes on the right schedule. You can book it one time, monthly, or bi-monthly, and every pro is background checked, insured, and interviewed. Pricing is based on your lot size and shown as an exact, upfront price in the app.
